Bed Bug Control Scams In Recent News

Bed bug control scams are a lot more common than you might think. Unfortunately, this industry attracts more than its fair share of scam artists. The reason why is simple. Conmen prey on people’s desperation. They know that some of us will do anything to get rid of these pests. This means that we will often fall for the most outrageous lies and scams. Here are some stories of bed bug scams doing the rounds today.

Bed bug control scams from around the world

The first bit of news comes from Athens in Greece. This doesn’t exactly fall into the category of bed bug control scams. Rather, it’s a hoax. You see, Athens is a major tourist destination. Unfortunately, this has many knock-on effects. One of them is rising rents. Due to the large influx of tourists, many locals are being forced out of the city.

This is why residents are now spreading rumours that homes in the area are infested with bed bugs. These residents have placed posters around the city, warning of this problem. The posters request that tourists leave “for their own safety” and also mention a 500 euro fine. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your view), this is untrue. That’s according to Greece’s health ministry, which has stated that these signs are a hoax.

Have bed bug control scammers been caught?

On a more serious note, two men were recently arrested in France for running bed bug control scams. These villains mostly targeted pensioners with phoney pest control inspections. They phoned up vulnerable old people and claimed that their neighbourhood was seeing an infestation of bed bugs.

They then claimed that the pensioners could have their home fumigated at a “discount” price. As you can imagine, no actual work was done. When these shysters arrived, they simply sprayed the room with aerosol and claimed they had fumigated the room. They also offered “bed bug ointment” to their victims. This ointment was eventually found to be nothing more than scented Vaseline.

People soon began to complain about these bed bug control scams run by unlicensed pest technicians. Police carried out surveillance and these men were arrested after leaving their latest victim’s home. It was discovered that this pair of criminals managed to rip off more than 50 people. In the process, they netted tens of thousands of euros. Both have now been charged with multiple counts of fraud.

The moral of the story is that you must be careful when dealing with pest control companies and contact the right people if you find bed bugs. There are dozens of people out there who are looking to take advantage of your situation. This is why it’s so important that you deal only with reputable companies. Do not work with anyone who knocks on your door, or people who call you up randomly. Legitimate pest control companies do not do this!
