Which Methods Are Most Effective To Stop Ants?

For most people, ants are relatively harmless. They do not disturb your peace of mind like bed bugs, cockroaches or rodents. In fact, most people simply ignore these pests. That being said, they can become a nuisance. For example, if your kitchen is covered in ants, then it can actually become irritating. At this point you’ll want to get rid of these pests.

But how do you actually do this, and what’s the best way to stop ants? What you should first understand is that ants are only after food. If you have a problem with the occasional invaders, ants, in your kitchen, then it’s most likely because your kitchen is dirty. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean your kitchen is filthy. Even relatively clean kitchens can attract ants. The problem is that there are things like crumbs on counters and floors, and these are attracting ants.

What this means is that the only way to stop ants is by cleaning. You have to clean, clean, clean. There absolutely cannot be crumbs or food residue anywhere because this is what causes ants to come indoors. The big secret is that ants are just like any other pest. They need food to survive. Once the food source is gone, they might actually leave out of desperation. This is why you must continuously clean. Clean up after cooking and eating. Wipe counters and floors. Wash dirty dishes, pots, and pans. Just keep cleaning until the ants leave.

But while this may stop ants, it isn’t always effective, particularly when dealing with one of the worst summer pests. Your next best bet is to also use a deterrent. There are a number of natural substances, such as cinnamon, which are effective. Simply place it near to where the ants emerge, and the problem should take care of itself. Ants follow a trail and if you can disrupt the trail, they don not like it.

What should you do about scout ants?

You also need to watch out for “scout ants.” These are basically lone ants which have been sent to look for food. When they find food, they return to the nest for reinforcements. Whenever you see one of these ants you should get rid of it.

Finally, you can also stop ants by sealing up their exit points. Look around your kitchen, and try to find where the ants are coming from. This will usually be along walls, the bottom of doors or where there are cracks. It could also be where countertops and finishings are loose, or where there are cracked tiles. Once you’ve pinpointed where the ants emerge, then seal up that exit hole. With any luck, the ants will not be able to get in, and will eventually go elsewhere.
